Freestyle For Love

Sooo, This one means a lot to me. Being that I am half Puerto Rican and all. Plus this is somewhat what I was raised on, during a period in my life. I fondly remember going to my TiTi Melinda's parties on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio. It was SOOOO LIVE, or at least what I can remember, they used to go hard, all night. Any way! The Musical Genre covered in this mix is called Freestyle. Straight from a 1970's disco, to the syncopated, synthetic instrumentation of 1980's electro, had House not come into effect in the early 90's I believe Freestyle would still be a popular genre today. Which is where that whole Miami/Florida bass style deviated from. Don't believe me? Reference any Real older Puerto Rican, or anyone from NY in the late 80'searly 90's, preferably The Bronx. Hell it was even featured in Wild Style & Beat Street. So with no further adieu, from a corner of my memory bank, I Present: Freestyle For Love
*1-Show Me = The Cover Girls
*2-Crush On You = The Jets
*3-Come Go With Me = Exposure
*4-Spring Love = Stevie B
*5-Can You Feel The Beat = Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam
*6-I Wonder If I Take You Home = Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam

I'm Going In. Cover Me.

Sooo, Some artist make such a lasting impact on others lives through their art form that people try to recreate or render the medium by their own means of reproduction. Weather it be a print of an a art work, a "study" which is a fancy term for biting their shii, or some fall so hard they maybe even have it inked in a tattoo form. or maybe their obsession is of a different nature, that of music. So for that vice their is karaoke, cars, bathrooms, and even those plastic microphones with a long spring in them. Then there is Youtube.com which is a different beast of a completely different nature. There are 100's of 1,000's of videos of people who have taken to their webcams to cover their favorite artists songs. Whatever genre they want to cover or render, they are all on the web. Hey some even make it to the Ellen show, or other C-List celebrity talk shows. So with no further adieu; I give you 15 Minutes of Cover Me Bad:

03/Ice Cream Paint Job=The Cataracs
04/Baby Got Back=Jonathan Coulton

That 90's kind of love, pt.1

Soo, born in the 80's, raised the 90's corrupted in the 10's. I was singing this song and I couldn't remember the artist, so I ask my R&B aficionado friend Mr.Fanfair. He couldn't think of it at the time either. So later that day he calls me. and ever since I've been singing the song on & off. So today was one of those days. Hopefully this will do. The song is out of my head & into your ears... This was the best way one could some up early 90's R&B. When it was right on the cusp of the New Jack Swing era. Anyway. Whateva.

Me & My Sunday

Ahhh Sunday, the wackness of what has been your week is gone by. DONE / OVER / FINITO / FIN! Chances are you have put your sunday sleep in jeopardy with a late night of vices and sins, but hey, I hope you put your heart in it. Now, all you want to do is (according to the weather); drink lemonade and chill out & maybe (go) get something to eat OR, Sleep, wake up, eat, repeat. At least thats kind of how my sunday would go in my ideal world. Speaking of my ideal world, every great character needs music, not necessarily theme music per se, but some good background music. So I think if I could score my sunday in under 15 minutes, this is roughly the score to my ideal sunday. Soo, Ladies, more Ladies, and Gentlemen; My Ideal Sunday Score (as broken down by times not song numbers):

11:00am / Groove = Bobby Lyle
2:00pm / Harlem River Drive = Eddie Palmieri
6:00pm / As = Gene Harris ant The Three Sounds
9:00pm / Lush Life = Nancy Wilson

The Modern Grown Folk

Sooo, back in the gap they had some good solid bands ranging from Maze feat. Frankie Beverly to Pink Floyd, even out to Abba, The Sex Pistols, & The Gap Band were all great bands. Some still touring today, either that or getting fat off publishing checks. Which now leads to today to some of these old birds to have saying "You don't know nothing about that there", or "Thats before your time", and my favorite "OHHH. Thats grown folks music". Which lead me to put together a reflection of some artist (*SOME ARTIST*) who would be considered as "Grown Folks Music" for some modern adults. These are just some of the ever widening artist who produce good music, both Independent and Commercially. Very seldom on the commercial tip, but still. SO PLEASE support these artist. None the less, I have selected a few; and one artist on this selection will be performing at Our Image Film Festival, today here in Houston, Tx at Cafe 4212. Located at 4212 Almeda. His name is Bel_Ami, the man is uber-talented. Please once again show your support.
1) Mmm Hmm - Erykah Badu
2) Run Away - Georgia Anne Muldrow
3) Many People - Amir Bel.Ami
4) Now or Never - The Rootsfeat. Dice Raw/Phonte
5) All Day Love Affair - Cee-Lo Green

Before the Lady of GaGa there was one. . .

Sooo I'm not afraid to say I'm a fan of Lady GaGa. Crazy I know right. Or rather maybe I appreciate what she is doing for commercial music right now. She is making these people step their game up. ALL THE WAY UP. She is a world wide artist at this point. Fashion/Art/Music all in one. Sounds good for her right(although they say she stole Roisin Murphy's style)? Ask yourself how did she get here. Someone else had to open the doors and set the bar very high(which she still hasn't surpassed)? Who would be such a rebel, who could show these scamps how to do it? WAIT?!?!?! Her? That old chick? She did what with a Puerto Rican Flag on tour while she was on tour? YEP, MADONNA! the O.G. to this female controversy stuff. She set the standard for artistic whatevers and pushed the music for the whoevers. So here is just a small dance-ier walkthrough of her some of her material. I tried to put as much as I could into this 15(really like 17) minutes of my mix. Here you go
01.La Isla Bonita = Madonna
02.Justify My Love = Madonna
03.Like A Prayer = Madonna
04.Open Your Heart = Madonna
05.Holiday = Madonna
06.Get Into The Groove = Madonna
07.Lucky Star = Madonna
08.Papa Don't Preach = Madonna
09.4 Minutes(Bob Sinclair Remix) = Madonna
10.Give It To Me = Madonna feat.Pharell
Hail The Queen
P.S. before Madonna was Grace Jones. Do ya homework suckas! But y'all dont like that. . . OWWW.

Indie Whensdie

Soo my friend Bernice has been asking me to get her a copy of this artist that I let her listen to like more than 5 months ago. I have been saying I would burn it for her, but I haven't. Its not like I don't want to do it. It's just the whole, receiving an Independent artists EP which has three songs on it versus buying an independent artists EP which only has three songs on it. Ya Feel Me? So any way instead of giving that to her I wanted to get in on the action and dance around a few laws and show my support to these artist in my ways of which only a Dj can. I would also like to add IF YOU EVER like any of the music by any of the artist featured in/on these mixes/conversation/videos, PLEASE, SUPPORT THEM! ! ! So with no further delay check out these Independent artist...

In My DREAMS

Sooo, I had a crazy ass dream. There were people I know, places I've grown up at/in, I was flying, there were some cute girls, I was making decisions, there were immediate scene changes, also instantaneous time and place changes as well, not to mention some cute girls, even colors, and places, and stuff. WOW! Thank God for dreams. Praise Jah for riddims. Thanks be to Allah for our abilities to muster the strength to combine them. So with all being stated, here is my presentation. Songs about dreams. This is just the first time to do it by the way, there will be more. I am really going to create a rendition of a dream through the soundtrack provide by my imagination coming soon. Maybe on the next rainy morning here in Houston. I feel I got the gist of it, but there were some songs I purposefully left out due to time constraints. . .

D2. Like A Dream = Chrisette Michelle
D3. DayDreaming = Lupe Fiasco feat. Jill Scott
D4. It Was All A Dream = Jay-Z feat. Faith Evans & The Notorious B.I.G.

Ammo-A-GoGo

As taken from This Wikipedia Page "D.C. has its own native music genre called go-go; a post-funk, percussion-driven flavor of R&B that blends live sets with relentless dance rhythms". This music has a good amount of history, change, and influence, not just those songs by Salt-N-Pepa back in the day and a Amerie hit, it is worth checking out. The style/genre of GoGo stretches back to the early funkier beginnings with Chuck Brown(featured on this mix, I mean its only right)who is credited with practically creating GoGo, to the uber popular E.U. Band who practically launched GoGo, to the Classic GoGo staple by J.Y.B. "Sardines", for more on GoGo either talk to anyone from THE REAL H.U.. OR 1.) Download the mix, 2.) Go Here, 3.) I was deemed an "Out Cast"

Soo, today I quickly delve into the world of the greatest duo of all time, arguably across the board but definitely in Rap AND Hip-Hop (YES THERE IS A DIFFERENCE): the certified diamond selling, 5 mics(when it ment something) world renowned Outkast! ! ! In this mix I tried to stay away from guest appearances, but if you know Outkasts story than you know there was the influence of Erykah Badu who is I believe the only actual noteable guest, outside of that that straight Kast folk. Which I must say I or one could not compile an essential Outkast mix, which this is not, in the span of 15 minutes. This is simply what I felt when I stepped to my turntables this morning. Sure its all above the 105 BPM mark, but still... SO! Ladies, More Ladies & Gentlemen I present Dat Kast; Outkast. Oh yeah, hey! They even had their own clothing line
1/Wheelz Of Steel - Outkast
2/Funkin Around - Outkast
3/Humble Mumble - Outkast feat Erykah Badu
4/Art Of StoryTelling pt.1 - Outkast
5/The Train - Outkast

A recent string of Keys

And then there is this one group. The Black Keys. Vocalist & Guitarist Dan Auerbach and Drummer & Producer Patrick Carney, coming straight out of the wicked streets of Akron, OHIO. Got together in 2001, and ever since they have been putting out some amazing music. So much so that they have as of recently garnered the attention of the man who made Jay-Z, well one of them at least. Any way, for more info, hit up their wiki page, hell I did. This mix is comprised of A song from *Attack & Release* few songs from most recent body of work *Brothers* and one song from a side project in between those, under the wing of Creative Control, who I must say actually inspired me to even do this blog stuff anyway. NONE THE LESS. Eating Time.
1+ Black Keys = Strange Times
2+ Black Keys = Everlasting Light
3+ Black Keys = Unknown Brother
4+ Black Keys = Psychotic Girl
5+ Black Keys = She's Long Gone

RETURN TO THE 36 CHAMBERS

Sooo, there was once an artist who was of equal relevance to Andy Warhol but of a music stance. There was once an artist who by no means gave second thought to his actions. There was once an artist who set the standard for the individual style. There was once an artist who since their shot into the worlds music ear has filled the void, and even in death has not been replaced. That ARTIST. Ladies & Gentlemen by any other name you could call him Russle Jones, Big Baby Jesus, Osirus, Dirt Dog, even Dirt McGirt, but please know that his name is T H E Ol Dirty Bastard. He is part of Pop Culture via art, he the topic discussions, he has been covered by other artist, he is even so iconic that he has been inked on somebody via tattoo. This Man has a legacy

So I was around the internet and decided to stop by the good folks at HipHopIsRead. I had been contemplating whether to do a Afro-Colombian set or some REAL Hip Hop. . . Just like an old WWF tag team match, with some outside assistance from their website Hip-Hop won. I had also been wanting to educate some on the sheer brilliance of the RZA and soul sampling, so thats how I kick it off. Cats & Dogs your treat, MY 15 MINUTES IN THE 36 Chambers:
I Like It : The Emotions
Shimmy Shimmy Ya : Ol Dirty Bastard
Baby C'mon : Ol Dirty Bastard
Its A New Day : Skull Snaps
Hippa To Da Hoppa : Ol Dirty Bastard
